How to Build Business Credit in 2026: EIN, D-U-N-S, Net-30 Vendors and PAYDEX
A step-by-step plan to build business credit separate from your personal file, including EIN, D-U-N-S, net-30 vendors, what PAYDEX measures and where business tradelines fit.
Short answer: Form a business entity, get an EIN and a business bank account, get a free D-U-N-S number, then open three to five net-30 vendor accounts that report to Dun & Bradstreet and pay them on time or early. Dun & Bradstreet generally needs at least three reported trade experiences from at least two suppliers before it calculates a PAYDEX score, and a score of 80 means you pay within terms.
Business credit is a separate file from your personal credit. Lenders, suppliers and landlords check it when they decide whether to extend terms to your company, and entrepreneurs on X keep asking the same questions: do business cards hit my personal credit, how do I get a high-limit business card, and how long does it take? This guide answers them with the steps in the order that works.
Step 1: Set up the business properly
- Register the entity (LLC or corporation) in your state. Ask a legal or tax adviser which structure suits you.
- Get an EIN from the IRS at irs.gov. It is free.
- Open a business bank account and keep personal and business money separate.
- Use consistent details. The legal name, address and phone number should match everywhere, because bureaus match data on those fields.
Step 2: Get your D-U-N-S number and complete the profile
A D-U-N-S number is the nine-digit identifier Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) assigns to your business. Request it free at dnb.com, after searching to make sure one does not already exist. Duplicate records cause matching errors. Complete the profile: legal name, address, phone, industry code, employees and revenue range.
Step 3: Open vendor accounts that report
Net-30 means you buy now and pay within 30 days. The vendor reports your payment history to business credit bureaus only if it participates, and many do not. Ask each vendor directly which bureaus it reports to before you rely on it. Categories that often report include office supplies, shipping and packaging, industrial equipment and technology providers, according to Nav, but verify each one because reporting relationships change.
Step 4: Understand what PAYDEX measures
The PAYDEX score is D&B's dollar-weighted indicator of how a firm pays its bills, from 1 to 100:
| PAYDEX | Payment practice |
|---|---|
| 100 | Anticipates (pays well ahead of terms) |
| 90 | Discounts (pays early) |
| 80 | Prompt (pays within terms) |
| 70 | 15 days beyond terms |
| 50 | 30 days beyond terms |
| 30 | 90 days beyond terms |
Because the score is dollar-weighted, larger invoices carry more weight. Pay on time first, then early where you can.
Step 5: Add a business credit card and other accounts
After you have vendor history, consider a business credit card. Reporting practices vary: some issuers report to business bureaus, some to personal bureaus, and some only report problems such as delinquencies. A personal guarantee is common, so a default can reach your personal file. Read the card agreement before you apply.
Where business tradelines fit
A business tradeline is a vendor or credit account that reports to business bureaus such as D&B, Experian Business, Equifax Business or Creditsafe. Some marketplaces list business tradelines that are described as reporting to Creditsafe, D&B and Equifax, such as a revolving account or a net-60 line. These can speed up a thin business file, but they do not replace the basics above: an entity, a D-U-N-S profile and a record of paying vendors yourself. Check the details of any product, including who reports, for how long, and what your obligations are.
Common questions people ask
- Does a business card show on my personal credit? It depends on the issuer and on your activity. Do not assume it never will.
- How long does it take? D&B needs several reported experiences first. Expect 60 to 90 days for early data, then longer for a strong score.
- Can I skip the personal guarantee? Some products underwrite on business metrics, but most new businesses will be asked for one.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good PAYDEX score?
An 80 or higher indicates payments within terms. Scores above 80 mean payments earlier than terms.
How many trade lines do I need for a PAYDEX?
D&B generally requires at least three trade experiences reported by at least two suppliers before it calculates a score.
Do I need a D-U-N-S number to get business credit?
It is the identifier D&B uses to track your business, and many lenders and vendors check it, so it is an important early step.
Can I build business credit with bad personal credit?
Net-30 vendors often do not check personal credit or require a personal guarantee, which makes them a common starting point.
Are business tradelines legitimate?
Vendor and credit accounts that truly report payment data are normal. Be cautious with any offer that promises scores or funding, and confirm exactly who reports and how.
